What do you want to do?
The first step of getting the job you want is knowing what that job is.
Consider your passions, your motivations and drive, and don’t just limit yourself to the types of jobs you’ve fulfilled so far. Keep your options open and focus on what you want to do.
To help determine the career path you wish to pursue, ask yourself the following questions:
Why do I need to work?
For many, the reason they need to work is financial. But imagine if you didn’t have to consider income – you’d be able to choose the work you want to do, simply for the pure joy and pleasure of it. What would you do?
Where do you want to work?
Some jobs will require you to attend the same office or site every day, while others may involve
travel. You should also consider the type of interaction you want to have with others – some jobs are desk-bound with very little communication whereas others can be highly interactive.
What environment do you want to work in?
Some people want to be surrounded by colleagues working in a team; some would rather fly solo. Do you like fast-paced environments? Or perhaps you prefer a role with more regular down-time?
What benefits do you want, and how much would you like to earn?
Consider how much you need to make. What benefits do you want? What employers provide this?
What opportunities do you want?
Think about your career path and the opportunities that are available to you now, and the opportunities you want to be available in your future. You might find the right job for you is more
about the career paths it opens up than about the work you want to do.
Success in your chosen field doesn’t just happen. It takes hard work, dedication and focus.
