With more jobs than talent available in the engineering employment market, finding that perfect hire for your business can be a challenge.
Luckily, the advent of online recruitment, and ultimately, social media, has paved the way for a new type of hiring, enabling companies to source a breadth of skills all at a few clicks of a button.
In particular, LinkedIn has become an invaluable engineering recruitment tool when it comes to finding the very best from the rest. With over 390,000 UK-based engineering professionals currently on LinkedIn, it’s a must-use resource when it comes to engineering recruitment, but where do you start?
A webrecruit survey explored engineering job seekers’ use of LinkedIn when it comes to finding new opportunities. Over 300 engineering professionals completed the survey, providing us with valuable insights on where and how they look for jobs using LinkedIn.
Based on the results of the survey, here are some of the ways you can solve your engineering recruitment problems using LinkedIn.
What do you find LinkedIn most beneficial for?
43% of respondents found LinkedIn’s most useful asset is the ability to look for jobs. 38% find LinkedIn most useful for building their network and engaging with other engineering professionals. 10% use it to learn about other opportunities and 9% find it most beneficial for engaging in discussions and polls.
Based on these results, ensure you have set up a strong company profile and keep it updated with engaging content, such as industry news, polls, company updates and your latest job openings.
Share job advertisements via your careers page (it’s a paid listing, but worth it). Make the most of LinkedIn’s transparency by asking employees to share job openings within their networks. That way, not only will you target those actively looking for jobs on LinkedIn, but also those that are not necessarily looking.
How much time do you spend using LinkedIn per week?
The average time engineering professionals spend using LinkedIn is 1-3 hours per week (36%). 32% spend up to 1 hour on the site per week. 9% spend 3-6 hours, 9% spend 6-10 hours and 6% spend 10+ hours per week.
Since the majority spend very few hours on LinkedIn per week, it’s paramount that you ensure a continuous feed of information so that you will remain visible. If you’re tight for time, platforms such as Hootsuite are ideal for scheduling status updates.
Are you a member of any engineering groups on LinkedIn? If yes, how many?
LinkedIn’s groups have become an invaluable way for job seekers and employers to engage, connect and contribute to discussions of relevant interest.
It would seem, most engineering job seekers are aware of these benefits with 70% of respondents joining relevant engineering groups on LinkedIn compared to just 30% who haven’t.
However, when asked how many engineering-related groups they belonged to, the majority of respondents (76%) were only in 1 -10 groups. 17% were in 11-20 groups, and 3% were in 41-50 groups.
If you decide a LinkedIn group is the way forward for you, it can pay huge dividends when it comes to recruitment.
With a LinkedIn group, you can:
– communicate with members on a weekly basis by email using the ‘Send Announcement’ tool
– invite applicants within your existing talent pool to join the group
– invite your suppliers to provide unique content
– be realistic about what you are measuring – referrals, comments…applications?
– promote your careers website or other elements of the business
If you find a role you’re interested in, which of the following are you likely to do first on LinkedIn?
Lastly, we asked engineering job seekers what they’d do first on LinkedIn should they find a role they’re interested in. 44% said they would follow the company, 23% would request to connect with the hiring manager, and 23% would join the company’s careers group (if they have one).
