What is the regional recruitment picture in the UK?

UK-300x300Recruiters and candidates alike may be interested to read of the different states of the job market in various regions of the UK. Those using Webrecruit (http://www.webrecruit.co.uk) as their recruitment agency may be intrigued to learn of how competition for a job differs across the various parts of the country, as well as which cities perform best in certain sectors.
A workforce study in early 2013 revealed that the best cities to find a job were Aberdeen, Cambridge and Guildford, where there were more vacancies than unemployed people.
Southern cities predictably performed strongest in the list of job hotspots, although there was also decreased competition for vacancies over the previous six months in Edinburgh and Cardiff – by 20 per cent and 14 per cent respectively.
The toughest place to find a job in the UK was Hull, with firms recruiting staff seeing an average of 52 applicants for each vacancy.
Other areas ranking highly for applicant competition included Sunderland, The Wirral, Wolverhampton and Bradford. London ranked as the seventh best city to find a job, with a mere 2.4 jobseekers per vacancy, although still this represented a surprising six month high.
Much less surprising for anyone involved in staff recruitment were the average salary figures, which fell in several UK cities.
The sharpest drops in the last few months had been seen in Wales, the West Midlands and Eastern England, amounting to 9 per cent, 7 per cent and 6 per cent respectively. More resilience was seen in the wages of towns like Preston, Nottingham and Stoke-on-Trent, with increases of up to £5,000pa being recorded since the previous August.
Many recruiters and jobseekers will also be interested in the sector hotspots in various parts of the country. In Aberdeen, for example, it was found that more than half of open vacancies were in the engineering and oil and gas industries. Hull proved a rare hotspot for jobs in engineering, nursing and accounting, with Newcastle another focus area for engineering recruitment.
Guildford is where many of the UK’s healthcare vacancies can be found, Edinburgh is a major source of IT jobs and London is the top city in the UK for the recruitment of teachers and chefs, relative to its size. It was the country’s weakest for call centre and waiting jobs, however. Those looking for a construction or HR role, meanwhile, will face the toughest task in Slough.
Trend statistics like these not only highlight the cities in which jobseekers should search for particular roles, but also those where businesses are best advised to base themselves in the hunt for talent.
