10 ways to make the most of LinkedIn

With LinkedIn paving the way for businesses and recruitment, as a job seeker, it’s worth making the extra effort to help you in your job search.

Here are ten quick ways for you to get more out of LinkedIn and help you on your quest to career success.

1. If Facebook represents your social life, LinkedIn represents your business life so ensure you complete your profile.

2. Post professional updates. Think of them like brief conversations at networking events – you never know what might catch someone’s attention.

3. Ask colleagues and clients for recommendations. If it’s really good, ask to link it to their LinkedIn profile so people can see who’s recommending you.

4. Join groups that are relevant to your industry. It’s a great way to network and meet new people.

5. Earn the trust of others and promote yourself as a thought leader by contributing to discussions.

6. Link your profile to other social media where you can showcase your work, such as your Twitter feed, blog or YouTube video.

7. Don’t connect with anyone and everyone – take it lightly. On LinkedIn, your professional network is a reflection of you so make sure it says the right thing.

8. Make the most of SEO. Target your key phrases and create valuable links to your personal website or blog to help you show up in search results.

9. Be helpful and post relevant content that like-minded people will be interested in. You will boost your profile and build your reputation as an expert in your field.

10. Remember social media etiquette. If you wouldn’t do it, say it or share it in person, don’t do it, say it or share it on LinkedIn.

Whilst it may seem time consuming to fully leverage the benefits of LinkedIn, just five minutes a day can do wonders for your personal career.

    Thanks for your comments. I completely agree with your comment regarding recruitment being less about CV writing and interviewing. Employers today want to know about their candidates drivers and motivations to ensure they can be aligned to their business. Social media is an excellent place to find out more about potential employees that you wouldn’t have gained elsewhere. Although you could argue the privacy factor regarding this, it’s not advocating these principles, rather ensuring you don’t make the wrong hire.     A good list of tips. With all of these new technological tools, there is certainly huge amounts to be gained, by both recruiters and job seekers, but they need to be used well.

    Online recruitment is certainly taking over and changing the skills required to find the best jobs. These days it is less about CV writing and interview, and more about your use of online social media tools.
