An expert has called for more government funding to help usher candidates towards technology-based careers.

The Confederation of British Industry's Sarah Morris told the BBC that there are currently not enough job seekers to fill the surplus of vacancies we are to see in the future.

Ms Morris said there will be two million new jobs created that will require candidates skilled in science, technology, engineering and maths.

However, she continued: "We're calling on the government to invest a modest £120 million in specific careers advice to show young people exactly how promising a career in engineering can be."

She added that if the government does not take action, the UK risks losing "jobs to foreign competitors".

It seems the UK is not the only European country experiencing a dearth of technically trained candidates - Germany this week announced that the number of students graduating in engineering in the country has fallen by 20 per cent since 1999.
