Many of the UK's leading accountancy firms are putting their recruitment efforts on hold, according to recent research.

Staff numbers at accountancy businesses nationwide are set to fall next year as a result of the economic downturn, the online recruitment firm cvMail studies established.

It is anticipated that the scale of work being brought to accountants will fall in months to come and their online recruitment activities will be slowed as a result.

Only five per cent of the companies quizzed said they are definitely going to cut their staff levels but recruitment is set to be curtailed by the majority.

Andy Eddleston from cvMail told Accountancy Magazine: "The effect of the credit crunch on top accountancy firms has been felt in a slowdown in corporate finance work and may feed through into consultancy work."

Earlier this week, TheLadders.co.uk company told OnRec that many people around the country are submitting poorly written CVs that leave potential online recruiters unconvinced of their value as an employee.
