Despite the recent statistics showing that people are now spending less time commuting to and from work, many employees would rather travel further than accept a pay cut, it has been discovered.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) claims that those with senior-level positions have to cover long distances to keep their jobs, as do those in the mining and quarrying industry as they have high salaries but few qualifications.

Paul Sellers, TUC working time policy adviser, said: "Many of those workers would prefer to stay in the industry than take a 50 per cent pay cut and work nearer to home."

While many businesses now offer flexible working schemes, finance employees supposedly have some of the longest commutes of all.

According to the TUC analysis of the Labour Force Survey, there are now around 5,311,000 people making journeys to work which last longer than an hour every day.
