A poll has found that a third of major UK employees are reluctant to employ candidates hoping for rewards and harbouring ambitions to move quickly up the career ladder.

The survey, commissioned by Leaders in London, also found that 36 per cent of 1,000 business leaders polled predicted job cuts, while 51 per cent admitted it was difficult to keep workers motivated.

Ros Oxley, managing director for Leaders in London, said: "Business leaders are increasingly finding that they're at the sharp end of the credit crunch and need to take stock of how they run their organisations."

She added that many companies are trying to find cost-effective ways to maintain their employees' morale.

The latest Nationwide consumer confidence index found that people are more reluctant than ever to shop for non-essentials, with factors such as rising oil and food prices and job insecurity apparently playing a part.
