Croner: Pay rise demands up

6.8.2008

Employees are making increased demands for pay rises, leaving businesses hot under the collar, a study has found.

Most employers questioned in a recent survey said they had granted employees higher rises than last year, but 30 per cent said they gave less.

The report, from business advisors Croner, found that 40 per cent of employers polled felt pressured to improve on last year's pay rises.

Business director of the firm Andrew Walker said: "We are all experiencing a higher cost of living, partly due to fuel costs and energy bills […] so we exert pressure on employers to give their staff pay awards at least in line with inflation."

He added that despite this, increasing wages may not be a practical option for many employers right now.

In related news, consumer confidence experienced its biggest drop since Nationwide began keeping its index to monitor consumer trends in 2004.
