Employees plan to 'work beyond 65'

Employees' attitudes towards retirement are changing with many saying they now plan to work until they are older than 65, new research suggests.

Because life expectancy is increasing, those who leave their job at the traditional age will now be in retirement for almost as long as they have worked.

A survey by AEGON shows that while one in ten employees said 'love of the job' dissuaded them from finishing work, 14 per cent claimed they simply felt too young.

Mark Locke, a spokesperson for AEGON, said: "The whole attitude has changed over the last few years. Gone are the days when you reached 65, got your carriage clock and settled in for a sedate retirement."

He believes this is because people are leading much more active lives and are therefore staying younger for longer.

Recently, people campaigning for age equality lost a key stage in their fight to get rid of the compulsory retirement age, the Press Association reported.
