Employment levels rising

The levels of employment around the country are on the increase, according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

Over the course of the three-months to the end of June, total employment around the UK reached 29.59 million, which is the highest level since records began in 1971.

However, these figures are said to reflect the rising age of Britain's working population and the number of people claiming jobseekers allowance has been rising in recent months.

Online recruitment is growing in popularity among employers but the total number of posts they have to fill fell by more than 32,000 during the second quarter of this year.

There are now in excess of 840,000 Britons claiming unemployment benefit, which amounts to 2.6 per cent of the overall workforce, the ONS reports.

Meanwhile, Harris Interactive recently revealed that close to one-quarter of all employees in the UK are actively looking for new career opportunities.
