Ethnic minorities 'still facing employment gap'

Ethnic minorities 'still facing employment gap'
21.7.2008
There remains an "employment gap" between ethnic minorities and the white the rest of the UK population, a recent report has indicated.
According to the public accounts committee at the House of Commons, Britons from ethnic minority backgrounds are 14.2 per cent less likely to be employed than the rest of the population.
The committee also reported that there are a relatively large number of ethic minorities entering temporary jobs.
Responding to the findings, the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) has suggested that temporary jobs are being used as a "stepping stone for ethnic minorities to enter the labour market".
The flexibility of the online recruitment processes often involved in filling temporary positions means they are more easily accessible to people from all backgrounds, the REC maintains.
Internet-based advertising and online recruitment spending by the government has been increasing considerably in recent months, the Central Office of Information revealed last week.
