Up to 10,000 new jobs could be created in the UK thanks to a new government initiative to encourage greener motoring.

It is also estimated that a further one million green collar positions may be available by 2030, Recruiter reports.

This is due to plans announced by transport secretary Geoff Hoon to provide 100 electric cars in towns and cities across the country, giving people the chance to give feedback on the measures required to make environmentally friendly motoring a reality.

Speaking at a meeting in Whitehall on Monday, Mr Hoon spoke of the benefits of low carbon vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

"If we can inspire more people to use them, it will help us to make a positive impact on climate change," he added.

Last month, employees in Dublin took part in a scheme launched by the city's transport office to leave their cars at home and participate in a greener commute, the Irish Times reported.
