A significant amount of small business owners in the UK have said they cannot afford to put their jobs on hold to take a holiday this year.

In the middle of the credit crunch, 42 per cent of employers asked by Manchester-based telecom company Unicom said they would not take advantage of a break this year.

Chris Earle, Unicom's operations director commented: "Small business owners and managers are clearly working harder than ever to weather the current economic storm and when many of them need a break they find they can't take one."

He also claimed that recent statistics - showing the amount of phonecalls small businesses make have remained static throughout the summer - indicate that people are working harder than ever.

According to Britain's leading employers' organisation, the Confederation of British Industry, things are not set to improve anytime soon as the country could be on the brink of a recession.
