It seems that job seekers are smartening up to make a good impression in interviews as sales have soared for one luxury shirt-making company, even though overall retail figures in the UK have fallen.

The increasing competition between candidates and a slowing of recruitment in some sectors may be the reason applicants are so keen to impress.

According to the Scotsman, there has now been a surge in sales for TM Lewin and the company is £1 million ahead of sales targets thanks to business from eager job seekers.

Fiona Brown, assistant manager of the company's Edinburgh store, said: "We find a lot of people come in to buy new suits, shirts and ties for interviews.

"We also find young guys are coming in to get suited and booted to make an impression in their first job," she added.

Last month, Interviewgold.com claimed that job seekers need the ability to communicate effectively and stand out from the crowd during both traditional and e-recruitment processes.
