The number of employees on the lookout for a fresh challenge has increased this year, according to a new poll.

Harris Interactive statistics show that one-quarter of workers are actively looking for a new job - compared to 16 per cent in 2007.

Economic uncertainty is a possible explanation for the increase in itchy feet, according to Tony Roy of CareerBuilder, the firm which commissioned the research.

In advice that might be helpful to any workers about to use an online recruitment site, he said: The most successful job seekers will be knowledgeable about their potential employers, customise their CVs for the position at hand and focus on their ability to deliver results."

The news follows a report from the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development which revealed that four out of five employers have not embraced Web 2.0 in their online recruitment strategies.
