New employment laws put on hold by the credit crunch
21.10.2008
The economic crisis in the UK could put a stop to new laws that would affect employees and job seekers with children.
There had been plans for an extension of the right to request flexible working, but this has now been postponed by business secretary Peter Mandleson under a review of recent policy announcements.
According to the Independent, a government source said: "Everything is up for review. What was right two weeks ago might not be right now."
David Yeandle, head of employment policy at manufacturers' body the EEF, welcomed the news saying employers need time to adapt to legislation, especially in the "more difficult economic environment that we are now facing".
Last week, it was announced that changes to the law regarding flexible working rights could mean that around 4.5 million more people would have the chance to request them.
