Employers will be encouraged to make sure their employees reach their full potential by an imminent new government-funded review.

Yesterday business secretary John Hutton announced the plans for the Review of Employee Engagement and Investment, which will begin in 2009.

He said that for a company to be successful it had to realise that its employees were its most important asset.

"We need to better understand what drives some businesses to engage with their workforce and invest in their people more than others and look at how we can urge others to do the same," Mr Hutton explained.

The review, led by David MacLeod, a non-executive director at the Ministry of Justice, and Nita Clark, the director of the Involvement and Participation Association, will make recommendations about how employers can get the most out of their workers.

Last month a survey by recruitment firm Randstad found that more than half of employees questioned had not received any training from their job in over six months.
