As many as one in five British workers are frustrated in their current role, a recent study has found.

Management consultancy the Hay Group polled close to one million people and concluded that company structures are leaving many employees unable to act on their own initiative.

Indeed, close to half of respondents to the survey said they did not have the authority they need to make important decisions about their work.

Online recruitment is increasingly being used by employees to find their ideal post but positive working environments remain difficult to find, according to the Hay Group's study.

"With fierce competition for the most talented employees, companies' efforts to engage their people will be wasted if not backed by a supportive and enabling environment," said Ben Hubbard from the firm behind the research.

The recruitment sector is the most stressful business sector in the UK, a report from Siemens and the Stroke Association claimed recently.
