A poorly written CV is likely to leave a prospective employer utterly unimpressed and in no mood to offer a job, it has been claimed.

Certain words that an applicant might think give a positive impression of themselves can be interpreted in an entirely different light by potential employers, according to experts at the CV critiquing company TheLadders.co.uk.

For example, using the word "adventurous" or the phrase "seeking a challenge" can be viewed by businesses as denoting a person who is easily bored and is unlikely to be an asset in the long term.

"It's incredible how one word can communicate the wrong notion on your CV," Sarah Drew, general manager of TheLadders.co.uk told the OnRec news service.

"A CV is a window to who you are and should be used as a tool to communicate what you want your potential employer to know."

The most recently published National Online Recruitment Audience Survey suggested that one in three people use a search engine to track down a recruitment agency that can help them find a job.
