Women candidates are "shyer" and "less aggressive" than men when it comes to salary negotiations, claimed an expert.
The British Association of Women Entrepreneurs (BAWE) has also said that though things will slowly improve, male employees will always earn more in certain sectors, such as construction or banking.
According to figures calculated by the Fawcett Society, women working full-time earn an average of 17 per cent less an hour than their male counterparts.
Concerning salary negotiations, Tanya Hine, president of the BAWE, said: "On the whole, I would say that women are shyer about it and not as aggressive."
"It is very often that women will leave work for a while to have children and they come back and have to start somewhere down the career ladder again," Ms Hine added.
Other research conducted by the Fawcett Society also found that women make up only 19 per cent of MPs in parliament, seven per cent of top police officers and nine per cent of national newspaper editors.
