People in the UK should focus on working smarter and not harder, according to life coach Lynette Allen.

Thousands of Britons use online recruitment to find the job they want but once they are in employment the temptation is to work harder than is necessary or advisable, Ms Allen insists.

"We are under a lot more pressure than we have ever been to be available to people," she said.

"We have never been in this culture before and it's about really working out our priorities and managing our time."

Ms Allen's comments came after a study by Standard Life Healthcare found that more than one-third of people in the UK find it difficult to switch off and unwind after they finish work.

Work commitments have caused 20 per cent of people to miss a workout they had planned, the Standard Life research also found.
