When it comes to other people's money, younger employees are far more curious than their older counterparts.

A survey of workers conducted by Ceridian found that 72 per cent of those aged between 18 and 24 would like to know how much their peers are earning - compared to just 29 per cent of those aged 55 and above.

However, 73 per cent of staff members of all ages would not be happy if their salary details were made common knowledge, Online Recruitment reports.

Indeed, 53 per cent of respondents would not even let their family know how much they are bringing home.

Piers Hollier, a business psychologist at Getfeedback, suggested that the results show what a status-driven society the UK is becoming.

"Older people may be more content with their work-life balance and salary isn't the only thing on their minds at this stage in their life. This isn't the case with younger people who are still striving to develop a work-life balance," he said.

Meanwhile, the Association of Graduate Recruiters has argued that IT employers may need to open up their online recruitment strategies to encompass potential employees from non-IT backgrounds if they are to plug skills gaps.
