Job seekers looking to work with technology may find a new National Skills Academy aiming to fill the gap in skilled workers in the IT sector useful.

Opening in 2009 the academy will see employers, educators and stakeholders working together to address training needs of those already in the IT workforce as well as getting new recruits into the industry.

The sector currently employs over one million professionals and needs an extra 141,000 recruits every year to meet the rapid growth of the industry. It is currently expected to expand by five times the rate of the workforce.

Skills secretary John Denham said: "A new National Skills Academy for IT will help build a world-beating workforce that will improve productivity and competitiveness – not just among new recruits but within the existing workforce."

Last month Hays Information Technology conducted research which revealed that 47 per cent of firms want IT professionals to have a strong head for business.
