More and more job seekers are now turning to online recruitment services when applying for vacancies and interviews, it has been reported.

According to Recruiter, the internet is now the first place 80 per cent of people go when looking for a job.

Research from Jobsite.co.uk has also discovered that small to medium sized businesses (SMEs) invest around £300 million a year hiring 250,000 new employees.

However, 22 per cent of these leave after their first six months at a company, which means firms have to spend even more on recruitment.

Keith Potts, managing director of Jobsite.co.uk, explained why it is important for SMEs to employ the right staff.

"Hiring the wrong people is costly and can be seriously detrimental to the productivity – and even the future – of small and medium companies, particularly in the current economic climate," he said.

Earlier this month, Computer Weekly reported that financial firm LV= Liverpool Victoria is going to increase its use on online recruitment to hire new staff.
