James Caan: Job hunters need to understand the internet

20.11.2009

In his Daily Telegraph column, James Caan suggested that there’s been a noticeable shift in the recruitment landscape and jobseekers need to adapt to online job searching methods in order to increase their chances.

The Dragons’ Den star and webrecruit chairman wrote:

“The reality is that online recruitment is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with. Employers are becoming increasingly aware of its ability to reach more relevant candidates than more traditional means of recruitment. At the same time...there's been an influx of candidates entering the job market - many whom are new to online recruitment and the processes that govern it.

When it comes to online recruitment, the dynamics are different. And unlike traditional methods, job seekers are required to be a lot more proactive.

Online agencies typically receive around 2,000 CVs a day, all of which have to be manually filtered to see if you're right for the job. This process is a new concept to people re-entering the job market, many of whom are unaware that their CV will be filtered based on keywords.

Online recruitment isn't a fad – it's here to stay. The recession has forced many companies to slash their recruitment spend and, as a result, many are identifying ways to recruit the best talent at an affordable price. And by using resources such as their corporate website, job boards and online agencies, they're fast realising recruitment needn't be so expensive.

Even though my roots are within traditional recruitment, I really do believe the majority of roles will be filled online in future - which means job seekers are going to have to adapt to online recruitment. It means job seekers must be as confident using this medium as employers in order to capitalise on the number of jobs advertised using the internet”.
