Employers are being warned not to cut training budgets, which could be good news for job seekers using online recruitment sites as they may be able to increase the skills listed on their CV.

According to Personnel Today, senior management figures, including Marks and Spencer chairman Sir Stuart Rose, have issued an open letter warning that cutting staff training budgets is a "false economy".

It is hoped that by enhancing employee skills, businesses will be in a stronger position when the economy recovers.

It could also help job seekers to find employment should they be made redundant due to staff cuts.

The report said: "From our experience in previous downturns, it was the businesses that did invest in their staff that saw the most dynamic recovery."

Last month, psychologist Anjula Mutanda said that job seekers now need a "portfolio of skills" which could be useful to attract the attention of employers using online recruitment websites.
