Online recruitment agencies may find that there is an increase in the number of people using their services to find temporary or contract employment during the recession.
This is because they are often the first employees to lose their jobs when managers look to make staff cuts, the Financial Times has reported.
Kevin Green, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), warned that businesses should be careful about being too quick to make potentially "highly skilled" people redundant.
"They are experienced with their processes and, if they are lost now, they may not be available when markets turn up again," he said.
Some contract workers can end up being employed by a company or particular sector for many years.
Recently, the REC claimed that online recruitment agencies are a good place for job seekers to "find out what sort of jobs are out there".
