Calls for more workplace rehabilitation

21.7.2008

Calls have been made for more rehabilitation processes to be put in place in working environments around the UK.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the so-called 'welfare to work' measures being introduced by the government to encourage Britons off incapacity benefits are being undermined by the approach of employers.

Not enough is being done to help people struggling to work because of ill health or disability and more than one-third of employers around the country offer no rehabilitation services at all to their staff.

And this figure is close to 48 per cent among employers operating in the private sector, the CIPD reports.

"Government efforts to get people off long-term sickness benefit and back into work are to be welcomed," said Ben Willmott, the CIPD's workplace health advisor.

"But more needs to be done to stem the steady stream of workers heading the other way."

A number of online recruitment and human resource experts are set to speak at the upcoming CIPD conference and exhibition to be staged in Harrogate.
