Employers from the public sector are missing out on many of the benefits that e-recruitment can offer, one expert has insisted.

Emma Parry from the Cranfield School of Management is convinced that public sector organisations can cut their costs considerably through online recruitment but at present only five per cent of their overall recruitment spend is allocated to internet activities.

The credit crunch has put all employers under added pressure to increase efficiency but the public sector as a whole is missing out on the opportunities online recruitment can offer, Ms Parry wrote in Personnel Today.

"Online recruitment may have grown rapidly over the past ten years, but my experience shows many organisations are still not taking advantage of the full functionality of this technology to attract, sift, manage and respond to applicants," she said.

Ms Parry's work was backed by Monster.co.uk and she maintains that people at all levels and in all industries use the internet to look for jobs.

Earlier this month, Siemens and the Stroke Association reported that the recruitment industry is more stressful than any other in the UK.
